The Answer to "When is Easter" is Not as Easy as it Seems
HoneyBaked Ham customers often ask the question, "When is Easter?" Because Easter falls on a different date each year it can be hard to plan from one year to the next. So we thought we'd shed a little light on the subject and at least give you some advance notice on when Easter occurs for the next few years. That way, you'll be able to plan your Easter meal a little earlier - and we'll have plenty of time to ship you our traditional centerpiece, a lovely moist and tender spiral sliced ham.
Easter Comes But Once a Year - But When?
Easter is observed every year by Christians across the world. While Easter always falls between March 22 and April 25 in the Western world according to the Gregorian calendar, Eastern Orthodox Christians observe Easter based on the Julian calendar, which often means a later date.
The not-quite-so-simple answer to "When is Easter?" is that Easter falls on the first Sunday following the first full moon that occurs after the spring (vernal) equinox. However, the actual date can differ slightly because the full moon being referred to in this case is not the astronomical full moon, but an ecclesiastical moon that's determined from tables. The Gregorian dates for the ecclesiastical full moon come from the tables used by Western (Roman Catholic and Protestant) Christian churches while many Eastern (Orthodox) Christian churches use the older Julian tables. Confused? That's why tables are available.
Easter may be early or later in the spring
There are two things you can always rely on if you're wondering when Easter will occur. First, you know it will always be spring, since the vernal equinox marks the first day of spring. Second, you can be sure that it will fall on a Sunday. Beyond that, depending on the year, Easter may occur very early in the spring or later in April after the weather has warmed up a bit.
When Easter is observed in 2016, 2017 and 2018
The answer to "When is Easter in 2016?" is Sunday, March 27th.
"When is Easter?" For 2017 it is Sunday, April 16th.
If you ask, "When is Easter?" for 2018, it is Sunday, April 1st.
Early or late, Easter's the perfect time for a HoneyBaked Ham
The earliest Easter in the past 30 years (at least for those observing the Gregorian tables) occurred on March 23, 2008. The latest was April 23, 2000. Of course, Easter 2011 will even be one day later than that.
